PLANS FOR THE SEASON

We have tons going on this year. As well as the crops and gardens, we also have some construction/maintenance type jobs to be worked on such as: installing a new 24 ft. trellis for more hops, building repair, outside painting, the building of a lumber shelter and restoration work on the old granary which is over 150 years old and is now used as our drying shed upstairs and the machine shed in the bottom.

Hemlock posts for the corners.

We are great scroungers and love old lumber when we get our hands on it; however, we do have 5 beautiful, brand new 10 foot, 8 x 8 hemlock posts waiting to reinforce the corners of the granary once the great weather starts to appear and the helpers arrive.
We plan to replace all of the wooden edging around our boxed beds with hemlock, while reconstructing our pathways with the use of recycled materials, such as leaves, straw and cedar sawdust/chips.

The boxed beds in early Spring. Pathways ready for new layers.

Bags of leaves, cedar sawdust & straw being saved to replace the mulched pathways

New hemlock board delivery. Most will be used to replace the worn out edges of the boxed beds.
6 pieces will be used to make new runners for the top of kiwi arbour.

We have a great wood working shop, with lots of tools. Last season, we had to replace an exterior wall and with the help of Andre, this was completed.

Tearing it apart

New studding and the window frame installed

Almost all boarded in

Because of this huge outside job, the inside of the shop must be organized and re-vamped in early Spring of this year because it is just too cold during the winter. Some things were started in early winter, but had to cease until things warm up.

So, besides the redoing of the inside, we plan to do the exterior siding this season using the board and batten method.

Above is our kiwi arbor, which will have new runners installed this season to make a stronger roof base for these vigorous vines (below).
